About Us

Berks Free Medical Clinic (BFMC) first opened its doors in October of 2002 as an outreach of St. Daniel’s Lutheran Church in Robesonia, PA through the vision of Rev. Wayne Heintzelman. It was shortly thereafter incorporated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit entity. The clinic was originally founded to serve the acute health care problems. Due to the growing chronic needs as well, BFMC expanded its mission in 2012 to more effectively serve the community. Over the years the clinic has expanded and converted a nursery into two exam rooms and a storage room into an office and nurse station. The clinic has received support from The Reading Health System, GlaxoSmithKline, Highmark Blue Shield, Berks County Community Foundation, Diakon Lutheran Social Service Ministires,Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and other local faith-based organizations and private donations. Through the benevolence of the church, the clinic is still located in St. Daniel´s Lutheran Church. In August of 2023, the clinic expanded once again by opening a satellite clinic at Mary’s Shelter in Reading, PA. This new location better serves patients from the City of Reading while the Robesonia location remains open to serve patients who prefer that location and appointment times.
