Berks Free Medical Clinic provides free Primary Care to Uninsured Adults.

The mission of Berks Free Medical Clinic (BFMC) is to improve the health of the community by providing free primary medical care to the uninsured.

ABOUT US

Berks Free Medical Clinic provides free primary medical care to those adults without health insurance of any kind because they are temporarily or permanently ineligible for employer or government-sponsored plans and/or they lack the financial resources to purchase insurance protection on their own.

Founded in 2002 in Robesonia, we are a 501(c)3 nonprofit.  In 2023 we opened a second clinic in Reading to better serve the 50% of our patients who live in Reading.  Medical services are provided by a dedicated team of volunteer doctors and nurses and 3 part-time staff on Wednesday evenings in Robesonia, Tuesday mornings in Reading, a women’s clinic once a month in Robesonia, and a physical medicine clinic once a month in Reading.

In the 23 years since our founding, we have conducted over 10,000 patient encounters, providing the same level of quality care as private physicians at no charge to our patients.  If a patient requires a new prescription, we cover the cost for the first fulfillment.  We have an agreement with Reading Hospital to provide laboratory and radiology services at no charge to our patients. We also arrange referrals to address social inequities, such as food insecurity or unsafe housing, that impact our patients’ health and well-being.  As needed, we partner with other entities to provide advanced specialty care at low or no cost.

We value the quality of care we provide and have been award gold status by the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics and we are a member in good standing with the Pennsylvania Charitable Healthcare Coalition.  We have been deemed by Health and Human Services under the Federal Tort Claims Act that provides medical malpractice insurance to all our volunteers and staff.

As a 501(c)3 nonprofit, we receive no reimbursements from insurance companies or government agencies for services provided and rely on individual and corporate donations, along with foundation grants, to cover our operating expenses.  We are always in need of additional volunteers to help us expand our services with additional clinic sessions.  Would you be able to assist us through your time, talents or treasures?
